State of Flux, a group exhibition of artworks by 2025–2026 Annual Residents Camryn Claude, Justice Dwight, Margaret Meehan, and Sadie Sheldon, The Visual Arts Center of Richmond. While working in a wide variety of mediums, the artists-in-residence are connected by their explorations of transformation and states of being.
The only constant in life is change, and change comes in every shape and form imaginable. As human beings, our lived experiences are shaped by shifts and transitions—our flesh and bones susceptible to legacy and the passage of time; our interior worlds and forward-facing selves sculpted by forces seen and unseen. Curated by Monica Kinsey, State of Flux considers the impacts of transformation on ever-evolving states of being, whether through inner spiritual journeys, aging and illness, or the creation of new identities and modes of expression.
Margaret Meehan’s work is a look back through middle aged eyes. With historical references such as the Venus of Willendorf, fictional mothers like Linda from Bob’s Burgers, and real women such as her mother and herself. A self portrait titled “I’ve Been Gutted Before”(1970/2025) encapsulates the work hinting toward her birth with a congenital malformation and the year she was left to start over. A birth and a rebirth visualized with humor and durable vinyl. Pink pulls the exhibition together. The color of bubblegum, skinned knees of blood and puss and the aging flesh of a life progressing.
